All 60 seats on Waltham Forest Council were up for grabs with Labour previously holding a strong majority
The Green Party took control of Waltham Forest Council as their first ever London council in the 2026 local elections. The Greens gained the council from Labour by winning 31 seats. Labour lost 29 seats in total, dropping to only hold 15. Green Party leader Zack Polanski has declared “the new politics is the Green Party versus Reform”.
All 60 seats on Waltham Forest Council were up for grabs, with each ward represented by either two or three councillors. Wards in the borough are made up of of Cann Hall, Chapel End, Chingford Green, Forest, Grove Green, Hatch Lane & Highams Park North, High Street, Higham Hill, Hoe Street, Larkswood, Lea Bridge, Leyton, Leytonstone, St James, Valley, William Morris, Cathall, Endlebury, Hale End & Highams Park South, Markhouse, Upper Walthamstow, and Wood Street.
The Green Party now has two new mayors as well, Zoe Garbett in Hackney and Liam Shrivastava in Lewisham. Both were Labour mayoralties until Thursday’s elections, an indication of the huge losses facing the governing party.
Ms Garbett won with 35,720 votes to former Labour mayor Caroline Woodley’s 26,685. Mr Shrivastava received 35,265 votes, beating Labour’s Amanda De Ryk who had 30,374 votes and Reform UK’s Pete Newman who had 7,288 votes.
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan said the election results so far are “bitterly disappointing for Labour”, as he acknowledged Londoners are “frustrated”.
