A Barnet Council spokesperson said those elected will ‘discuss how the council will be governed’ as no political party now holds a majority
Labour has lost control of Barnet Council with no political party winning enough seats in the 2026 local election to now hold the overall majority of the council. These local elections produced a record 312 candidates – compared to 207 in 2022 – standing for 63 seats across the borough’s 24 wards. Each ward is represented by either two or three councillors.
Before Thursday’s election (May 7) the Barnet administration was made up of 40 Labour councillors (holding a majority), 19 Conservatives, a Reform councillor, a Green Party councillor and two vacancies.
In the 2026 election Labour won 31 seats (a loss of nine which means they lost their majority), the Conservatives won 31 seats (gaining 12) and the Green Party won 1 seat.
Barnet Council’s Returning Officer and Chief Executive, Cath Shaw, said: “Thank you to everyone who worked on these elections for all their hard work to run a smooth local election. I would like to congratulate all the successful candidates. We look forward to working with all our elected members to deliver their aspirations for the borough and continuing to make Barnet a great place to live, work and study.”
A Barnet Council spokesperson said: “Over the coming days, those elected will discuss how the council will be governed. In the meantime, residents will continue to receive Council services as usual. The formal position will be confirmed at the council’s Annual Meeting on May 19, where councillors will appoint key roles and agree the administration arrangements.”
