Signalling equipment was struck by lightning at Herne Hill station
A lightning strike has resulted in major disruption on a South London railway line. The route between Herne Hill and Denmark Hill will be affected until 6.30pm after the lightning bolt damaged the signalling system between both stations.
Passengers have been warned to expect cancellations or delays of up to 60 minutes while the service recovers. Earlier today London was hit by a thunderstorm as hail and lightning crashed down on parts of the capital.
Railway lines between Herne Hill and Denmark Hill were initially blocked while engineers were called to fix the issue, before the line reopened with delays. The same weather event has resulted in similar issues at Heathrow Airport with passengers told to expect delays when landing until 8pm this evening (Wednesday, May 13).
Southeastern passengers are able to use their ticket at no extra charge on the Elizabeth line between Abbey Wood and Central London, on high speed services between St Pancras International and Medway Towns, and on buses, Tube and other national rail services.
Unsettled weather is expected in London throughout the remainder of this week with a mix of sun, cloud and rain according to the Met Office. Temperatures will drop to 13C on Thursday, May 4 before climbing steadily towards the weekend.
BBC Weather expects next Thursday (May 21) to mark the return of sunny weather couples with highs of 24C.
