Sadiq Khan said the additional services would cost between £4 million and £9.5 million per year
The Mayor of London has no plans to introduce overnight Superloop buses following London Assembly pressure. Sadiq Khan said the extra services between 1am and 5am would cost £4 million minimum per year and potentially be even higher depending on the volume of buses.
The Superloop, which provides orbital routes mostly in London’s outer boroughs, was launched by Khan in 2023 while ULEZ restrictions on cars were being introduced. “The cost increases to £6.5 million per annum if these services ran at four buses per hour (bph), £7.5 million at 5 bph and £9.5 million at 6 bph,” he said, responding to question from Liberal Democrat Assembly Member Hina Bokhari on Wednesday, May 27.
“These costs would be to subject to commercial tendering and could vary significantly when operating conditions are examined in more detail. Currently, there are no plans to introduce a Superloop night service”.
The Mayor added these costs do not include running the recently launched SL11, due to its overnight route already being covered in full by the N472.
Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed plans to launch another Superloop route between Gants Hill and Rainham later this year. The SL12 will run between both areas every 12 minutes, with buses also stopping in Romford and Elm Park.
Other routes set to commence in 2027 and 2028 include the SL13 between Hendon and Ealing Broadway, the SL14 between Stratford and Chingford Hatch and the SL15 between Clapham Junction and Eltham.
TfL has released the consultation reports for both the SL14 and SL15 with feedback overwhelmingly positive for both.
