The East London Waste Authority has issued a ten-year contract to Veolia to provide waste and recycling services
Plans to redevelop two waste transfer stations in East London hope to reduce the amount of rubbish burnt and increase recycling. Veolia has secured a ten-year contract with East London Waste Authority (ELWA) to deliver sustainable waste treatment, recycling and management services, starting in December 2027.
Veolia will redevelop two waste transfer station sites, including pre-treatment and sorting processes. The aim will be to remove recyclables from the bulky waste stream by recovering more materials, thereby lowering costs for the ELWA.
In addition to redeveloping the two waste transfer stations, Veolia will operate four reuse and recycling centres and run haulage services across Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Newham, and Redbridge.
The initial 10-year contract price is approximately £183 million, with Veolia providing recycling and waste services for 1.2 million residents in East London. There will also be a possible five-year extension if needed.
Over £5 million will be committed to social value contributions, with the aim of making a notable and measurable impact on social, economic and environmental outcomes.
Residents will also benefit from a new Circular Economy Hub at the Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre, featuring stronger reuse provisions that enable residents to purchase items at a reduced rate, as well as an Education Centre to engage the community in sustainable behaviours.
Councillor Jo Blackman, Chair of ELWA, said: “I am pleased to announce the award of our RHRRC Contract to Veolia following a highly competitive procurement process. This is a critical part of the modernisation of our waste services in East London – improving the service to residents, making use of the latest technology and minimising our environmental impact.”
Richard Kirkman, Chief Executive Officer for Veolia UK, said that the new contract will deliver ‘high-quality and modern services that place community benefit at the forefront’.
