We’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to the hot weather
Another day, another heatwave.
According to the Met Office, the sixth of the year in London is due to set in this weekend, lifting the city out of its momentary heat lull and back into 32C heat. While today (Friday, August 7) we’ll bask in pleasant 26C highs, this weekend will see things pick up again.
Saturday (August 8) will be the first day of the new heatwave, breaking the heat threshold of 28C. A heatwave is defined differently across the country, but in London and the rest of the south east of England it has to be 28C or over for three or more days on the trot.
Sunday (August 9) will see the highest temperatures of 32C at around 4 or 5pm. It will cool off slightly on Monday and Tuesday (August 10 and 11) to the high twenties, before picking up again to the low thirties on Wednesday and Thursday (August 12 and 13).
That’s as far as the Met Office’s forecast goes, so it’s worth noting that it’s not impossible that it will continue into Friday next week and the weekend, too.
The BBC, meanwhile, forecasts a slightly cooler day on Tuesday (August 11), one that breaks the definition of ‘heatwave’. Their meteorologists do, however, for Wednesday (August 12) to Saturday (August 15).
Do bear in mind that forecasting the weather so far ahead – even just a week ahead – is very difficult and the forecast is liable to change at a moment’s notice.
In its long range forecast, the Met Office refuses to rule out heatwaves as far ahead as early September.
“The broad theme of high pressure remaining in place at least close to the UK seems most probable, with occasional more unsettled or changeable interludes, either resulting from Atlantic frontal systems or thundery plumes,” it reads.
“This means that rainfall amounts overall are more likely to be below normal than above. Temperatures will probably be above average and some spells of hot weather and heatwaves are possible, especially in the south.”
