Being in London at Christmas is like being in a holiday film. But if you’re planning a trip here for the festive season, there’s something I want you to know before you start trying to fill your itinerary with Christmas markets, festive afternoon teas and everything to do in London that you see on social media.

The way you plan your trip needs to change.

I’ve lived in London since 2013 and every year Mr Sunny and I make it our mission to experience as much of London’s Christmas season as we can.  Annually, we visit markets, seasonal attractions, Christmas light parties, festive afternoon teas and plenty of pubs along the way.

After doing this for more than a decade, I’ve learned that the biggest challenge for you isn’t finding things to do. It’s deciding which things are actually worth fitting into your London trip and limited time.

Is London Worth Visiting at Christmas?

If you’ve been dreaming about London during the holidays and want to know if you should come here, I’d jump up and scream, ‘Yes!’

There is something truly magical about walking through Central London when the lights are on, department stores are decorated and pubs are filled with people who are genuinely happy (and had far too much to drink!)

However, if you’re fantasising about snow caps on Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament you may be disappointed.

In 13 years, I have seen snow on maybe ten days in London. Two, maybe three, of those days were in December. A lot of what you see as iconic London in winter photos are very carefully edited images or just simply people using AI.

But, you may have heard about snow every hour in Covent Garden. That is true. And, where else in the world can you visit a Victorian Christmas Market with the Tower Bridge as the backdrop. It IS like being in a movie!

Visiting London at Christmas: Biggest Mistake

Christmas adds another layer of planning to an already busy city.

Many experiences require tickets. Some popular events sell out well in advance. Daylight disappears much earlier than many American visitors expect. And Christmas Day and Boxing Day are very different from an ordinary day in London.

There’s also the temptation to book everything that looks festive.

You can’t.

One of the easiest ways to make a London Christmas trip exhausting is to spend every day rushing from one Christmas experience to the next. Most people don’t anticipate how crowded things to do in London are during holiday peak travel times. And they misjudge how long it takes to get from one experience to another.

So the biggest mistake is planning blindly based on hundreds of saved videos you have on your phone. Instead, I recommend deciding what kind of Christmas experience you actually want before you start booking.

Visiting London at Christmas- Choosing What to Do

Start by thinking about what makes you excited about London at Christmas.

If it’s the atmosphere, you may get more from walking through decorated neighbourhoods like Covent Garden or Mayfair. Next, visit one market and stop in a traditional pub. Do this rather than spending hours at a crowded ticketed attraction that might not even be in Central London.

If you’re looking for a classic festive experience, Christmas lights, trees, afternoon tea and seasonal events could be higher priorities. For more luxurious travel, you can build your Christmas around a beautiful hotel, shows, festive afternoon tea, shopping and special dining experiences.

If this is your first London trip, be careful about allowing Christmas activities to take over your itinerary. You still want to see London itself. And don’t assume that the most famous Christmas attraction is automatically the best choice for you.

I’ve visited plenty of festive experiences that look wonderful in photographs. Some have been worth a return visit. Others were fun to experience once but wouldn’t make my personal list every year. That’s especially true of something like Winter Wonderland. I put it on rotation every few years. It’s a blast but is really expensive if you want to enjoy it properly.

That’s why I think choosing is more important than collecting. If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, there are also plenty of ways to experience the season without booking expensive attractions. I give you ideas in free things to do in London at Christmas.

And if you’re curious about how Christmas in Britain compares with what you’re used to in America, I’ve put together a guide on the biggest Christmas differences between the UK and USA.

Christmas Lights, Markets and Seasonal Experiences

Christmas lights are one of the easiest ways to make a London trip feel festive because you don’t necessarily need to dedicate an entire day to them. The same is true of Christmas markets. London’s markets aren’t quite the same as the famous markets you’ll find in cities such as Vienna, Strasbourg or Cologne, so it’s worth knowing what you’re actually looking for before you add more than one to your itinerary.

I have a whole guide to visiting London Christmas markets because there are some important differences between them, including the atmosphere, shopping and food.

And then there are the bigger seasonal experiences. For example, Christmas at Kew is a completely different type of Christmas outing from walking through Mayfair to see the lights. And it’s not in Central London.

I’ve also tried some very specific festive experiences, including a Grinchmas afternoon tea bus tour. These can be a lot of fun. But I’d always ask yourself one question before booking: Does this experience add something to my London trip or am I booking it simply because it looks festive?

Christmas Day is Different

If you’re going to be in London on Christmas Day, don’t treat it like another sightseeing day. Christmas Day has its own set of considerations, from what is open to how you’ll get around and where you’ll eat.

What makes sense for one visitor may be completely impractical for another depending on where they’re staying and what they’ve booked. The same goes for Boxing Day, which has its own traditions and a very different atmosphere from Christmas Day.

This is one reason I don’t believe there’s a single perfect Christmas Day itinerary for everyone. Your hotel location, family interests and traditions, along with transportation and priorities all matter.

Don’t ruin your London trip with a bad itinerary! Your dream Christmas in London starts here.

From sparkling lights to perfect itineraries, self-guided walks and everything in between, our Christmas in London guide is packed with festive magic (and Mr Sunny’s holiday sausage roll recipe).

How Many Days Do You Need in London at Christmas?

You can have a wonderful Christmas weekend in London, but you need to be realistic about what you can fit into it. If you have three days, I would much rather see you choose a few experiences that work well together than spend your trip racing around the city trying to tick everything off a list.

I’ve created a three-day Christmas itinerary in both a budget version and a luxury version inside my London Christmas Guide because the right Christmas trip looks very different depending on how you like to travel.

Watch my Christmas Weekend itinerary video to get ideas.

Before You Book Another Christmas Activity

Ask yourself:

  • Is this something I can only experience at Christmas?
  • Is it genuinely something I want to do?
  • Does it fit naturally with the rest of my day?
  • Is it worth the time and money?
  • Am I leaving enough room to simply enjoy myself and London?

Want My Plan Visiting London at Christmas Plan?

At this point, you probably realise that the hard part isn’t finding Christmas things to do in London. There are plenty. The hard part is figuring out what belongs in your particular London trip and how to put it together.

That’s why I created the Sunny in London Christmas Guide.

Inside, you’ll find four Christmas walks, a three-day itinerary with both budget and luxury versions and Mr Sunny’s 12 Pubs of Christmas, along with the planning information you need to turn all those Christmas possibilities into an actual trip.

The guide helps you figure out what to actually do.

And if you’d rather have me build a personalised London itinerary around your dates, interests and travel style, that’s where my 1:1 London Trip Consultation can save the day.
