The independent hotel has improved on its ‘2’ food hygiene ratiing that was given in June
London’s ‘best’ hotel is ‘delighted’ after receiving a 5/5 for food hygiene, following a shock 2/5 rating a few months ago.
The Royal Lancaster Hotel, next to Hyde Park and voted the UK’s number one hotel by guests on TripAdvisor, was recently re-rated by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
In June, they were handed a ‘shock’ 2, which indicated ‘improvements were necessary. General Manager Sally Beck told MyLondon she was ‘confident’ that when they were re-rated, they would get a five.
On September 7, the hotel was officially given a ‘5’ by the Food Standards Agency. On the official report, it was written that there was ‘good improvement and compliance with food safety obligations’. It also noted that pest activity was now ‘under control’.
Situated on Lancaster Terrace, the independent luxury hotel offers panoramic views of the iconic London skyline and Hyde Park.
Mrs Beck told MyLondon: “We are delighted to be back where we have always been at 5/5. Running a hotel with a food and beverage revenue of £20 million with 5 kitchens and 65 chefs is sometimes a challenge, and occasionally we drop a ball, which we did this time. It is great that between WCC and the EHO and our team, we can ensure that standards are kept high at all times.”
The hotel received its previous 2 rating due to factors such as ‘can openers not being cleaned’ after use and the ‘presence of mouse droppings’ in the pastry kitchen.
Mrs Beck previously said: ” From that day of the rating, things were fixed. I know we will get a five [in the next rating]. This experience showed we can’t get complacent.”
When MyLondon visited the site, new can openers had been installed in the kitchens, and a broken oven in the pastry kitchen had been removed. In the areas where mouse droppings were previously pictured, there were none there on our visit.
Now, the hotel has received a ‘5’ for its compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures, structural requirements and management/control procedures.
The Royal Lancaster Hotel has 411 rooms, including a variety of room types, and overlooks Hyde Park. The hotel hosts functions and events as well as suites. It lies adjacent to Lancaster Gate tube station.
