All 57 of Merton’s councillor seats will be contested in the highly anticipated local elections on May 7
Merton Council has confirmed the full list of candidates standing in the local elections. A total of 282 hopefuls will be fighting for the 57 seats on Merton Council as voters go to the polls on May 7.
Candidates are standing across all 20 wards, representing parties including the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Greens. Reform UK is also increasing its presence across the borough, standing a total of 57 candidates.
The South West London council is currently run by Labour, which has held control for over a decade. However, the Liberal Democrat opposition, which currently holds 17 seats on the council, will be hoping to shake up that control.
A small number of minor party candidates are also standing, with both the Animal Welfare Party – People, Animals, Environment and the Libertarian Party fielding one candidate each.
Elsewhere, the Merton Park Ward Residents’ group will be hoping to return its two incumbent councillors, while the only unaffiliated independent, Alex Forbes, is seeking to win a seat in Colliers Wood.
