The supermarket chain is expanding with new sites and 200 jobs because ‘too many Londoners don’t have an Aldi within easy reach’
Aldi has confirmed six new stores are opening in London before the end of 2026. The chain said it is targeting areas where residents lack discount retailers as part of a £40m investment. Earmarked locations include Twickenham Road, in Hanworth, Orpington West and Willesden High Road. Zone 1 is also receiving another shop, with plans for a Marble Arch branch now confirmed.
The expansion will create hundreds of jobs across Greater London, Aldi added. Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “We know household budgets are still under pressure, and too many Londoners don’t have an Aldi within easy reach. These new stores will bring our unbeatable value to more families while creating around 200 new jobs across the capital.”
In January, the discount chain revealed it would be bumping up wages for its shop floor workers, with Store Assistant pay climbing to £13.35 an hour across the country from March 1. Those within the M25 are now paid a minimum of £14.71 per hour, increasing to £15.03 with length of service.
Existing Aldi stores in Enfield and Kilburn will also undergo refurbishment at some point this year. Elsewhere, two new branches are set to open in Watford and Epsom.
Aldi previously announced plans to open 40 new stores as part of a £370million investment programme across the UK, with more than a dozen set to come to London alone. The London list included Chiswick, Notting Hill, Kensington, Hackney Central and Lewisham.
The German retailer has also reportedly signed a mortgage agreement to take over a former psychiatric hospital in Walthamstow. Bosses have acquired the land from the North East London NHS Foundation Trust, according to documents seen by City AM.
