A man ordered a full English breakfast at the luxurious, famed five star hotel, The Savoy in London, and the price he paid – and what it included – has caused quite a stir

A man treated himself to a full English breakfast at the prestigious London hotel The Savoy, but the price he forked out left many people baffled. The much-loved fry-up is a quintessentially British dish and continues to be a firm favourite among countless food lovers.

Cafés, coffee shops, brunch spots and restaurants up and down the country all offer their own take on the beloved breakfast, though certain staple ingredients are expected in any classic full English. Traditionally, it includes bacon, sausages and eggs – cooked in various ways, whether fried, scrambled or poached – alongside hash browns, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and baked beans. Black pudding and toast are frequently thrown in for good measure, too, and, of course, vegetarian and vegan varieties are also widely available.

The Savoy is a famed, luxury five-star hotel found on the Strand in the City of Westminster, central London. It’s renowned for its outstanding service, its sense of grandeur and rich history, its striking Edwardian and Art Deco design, its highly regarded Afternoon Tea, acclaimed bars, and much more.

One guest at the iconic establishment splashed out £45 on a full English breakfast to enjoy during his stay. He took to Reddit’s popular Fry Up subreddit to post a photo of his plate, which included one sausage, two fried eggs, bacon, beans, a grilled tomato, one large mushroom and two hash browns.

He wrote: “Also included – coffee, orange juice, sourdough, a pains au chocolat. Pretty good! Sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, mushroom all nice. Tomato a little underdone. Beans weren’t Heinz, dunno what they were but they were good.

“Next door is Simpsons. The breakfast there was £28, and I’m sure that would be at least as good and probably better. But by then I’d already paid for breakfast on both mornings I was there so I was screwed.”

In the comments section, fellow Reddit users were eager to voice their opinions, with many gobsmacked by the price. One said: “£45!!!! That is a lot of money for a basic looking breakfast.”

Another said: “I’m currently staying in a pretty basic all inclusive hotel in Spain and this doesn’t look much different to what my plate looks like most mornings.” A third simply shared: “I’d be fuming.”

But a fourth countered: “It’s a rip off but it’s the Savoy and those eggs look perfect to me, runny yolks. Bottom looks crispy but that doesn’t mean overcooked.” Another remained unimpressed and commented: “£45 for one sausage???” Someone else quipped: “That’s not a full English. Barely even half.”

While another joked: “It doesn’t look bad, but unless the eggs were laid by the golden goose and the pig was called Mary, a pet of the chef himself, 45 quid is pushing it a bit for a small breakfast.”

One commenter, however, could understand the pricing and explained: “It’s the Savoy, it’s about £500 a night for the cheapest room there. It’s never going to be cheap and if you’re wealthy enough to stay there, you can afford the £45.

“In no way is it value for money but if I was rich I’d give it a go. I tend to try a fry up in a different place every time I have one in pursuit of the Holy Grail, so if I was staying at the Savoy I’d probably give it a go.”

The original poster confirmed he believed it was a “good breakfast”, with his only complaint being that “the sausage was a little dry and the tomato was underseasoned and a bit undercooked.” He went added: “The room it’s in is incredible, the staff are all lovely and the food is good so no complaints to be honest.”

MyLondon has approached The Savoy for a comment.
