The pub in South West London has been a local landmark for decades

An iconic pub in South London that has seen the likes of Ed Sheeran, Kate Bush, and The Who perform has finally reopened after a significant refurbishment. The Half Moon in Putney, a legendary music venue and pub, underwent major renovations, including new furnishings and fixtures.

Since 1963, it’s been the beating heart of the local social and music scene in Herne Hill, hosting generations of gigs and serving as a hub for music lovers, locals and celebrations alike, hosting icons The Rolling Stones, Kate Bush and Ed Sheeran, to name a few. The historic venue now blends its rich musical heritage with a refreshed design, a brand-new first-floor dining space and a menu inspired by Deep South Americana.

The pub’s history dates back to 1903, and it began hosting live music in 1963. It became a popular spot for up-and-coming artists as well as icons such as The Rolling Stones, who graced its 250-capacity venue.

After a three-month refurbishment, the new-look pub still retains its retro features while boasting a refreshed look.

Step inside and the interiors hit the right note. The ground-floor bar strikes a perfect chord between rustic charm and a love of music, with exposed brickwork, stripped-back timber, and worn leather chairs creating a welcoming, lived-in vibe, while framed instruments, iconic albums, and neon signage celebrate the pub’s storied past.

Staying true to its roots, the pub continues to host nine shows a week, remaining the definitive place to see rising stars shaping the future of music, such as Lola Young and The Molotovs Outside. The spruced-up beer garden features new furniture and vibrant murals, ready for soaking up the sun if it decides to come out.

Now, the new space features black-and-white diamond flooring and music-themed detailing, with artwork that pays homage to live performers. A cinema-style overbar adds a touch of retro flair, while the stage, framed by a fresh red velvet curtain, keeps every act firmly in the spotlight.

Along with the refreshed stage, upstairs, the bar and terrace take centre stage. The first floor has been reimagined as a premium social and dining destination. Flowing seamlessly from the bar is the new rooftop terrace, a versatile indoor-outdoor space perfect for relaxing.

There is also an updated menu with pub classics as well as scorched cauliflower croquettes with salsa. The beer selection includes craft beers and cocktails, as well as drinks from South London-based independent brewery Gipsy Hill and popular fruit lager Jubel.

In 2013, the pub suffered severe flooding that nearly spelt the end of the venue, leading to its closure for four years. In 2017, after a local campaign and an online petition signed by over 6,000 people, the pub reopened.

Now, with this refurbishment, it seems The Half Moon is here to stay and will continue to provide a space for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The Half Moon is open all week. From Sunday to Thursday, it is open from 12 pm – 11 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is open from 11am to midnight. It is located at 93 Lower Richmond Rd., London SW15 1EU.
