A massive fire has broken out in a block of maisonettes in Mount Pleasant Lane, Clapton
More than 70 firefighters have been tackling a massive fire at a residential block in Hackney, East London tonight (Tuesday, May 5).
London Fire Brigade said it was called to a fire affecting a “block of maisonettes” on Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton at around 8pm. Pictures and videos shared online show a column of dark smoke rising into the sky above a church steeple, with one person saying it “started before my eyes so quickly”.
The brigade warned that the fire was “producing a significant amount of smoke” and urged people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed. Crews from Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton and surrounding fire stations have been deployed the scene, The Mirror reports.
London Fire Brigade has said in a statement: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a fire on Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton. The building is affecting a block of maisonettes.
“The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and we are advising people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke travel.
“The Brigade was first called about the fire at 2004 and Control Officers have mobilised crews from Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton and surrounding fire stations to the scene. A 32-metre turntable ladder is also in attendance.”
London Fire Brigade (LFB) then released a subsequent statement. It said: “As of 2215 hrs, crews are continuing to tackle a fire in a maisonette on the ground and first floors.
“The fire has been producing a significant amount of smoke. We are continuing to advise people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed at this time due to smoke travel.
“A rest centre has been set up locally for around 10 to 15 residents impacted by this fire and the Brigade is working alongside the local authority and partner agencies to support these residents.”
“Crews are expected to remain on scene through the night working to fully extinguish the fire and to dampen down,” LFB added.
In a post on Facebook, Hackney Council has that all residents have been safely evacuated following a fire at a residential block on Mount Pleasant Lane in Upper Clapton this evening.
The council said it has been supporting emergency services and is opening a rest centre for those who have evacuated.
