Student Finance England is alerting students to the important deadline

16:55, 07 May 2026Updated 17:01, 07 May 2026

Students across England should have received a new alert about an important deadline that is fast approaching, with barely more than a week left.

Throughout the 2024/25 academic year, around 2.86 million students were studying at colleges and universities across the UK, primarily in England. This total includes over two million undergraduates and close to 900,000 postgraduates.

Data from the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) shows that a record-breaking 338,940 UK 18-year-olds submitted applications for the coming academic year by the January 2026 deadline – an increase of 4.8 per cent. For those beginning their studies, the student finance deadline is now imminent. It is essential that students apply for finance as soon as possible to guarantee their funding is ready when their course begins.

A new statement on Gov.uk, released as part of an update notification on May 7, states: “New students starting courses in September 2026 should apply for student finance before the deadline to make sure their funding is in place for the start of term. If they apply late, their money could be late too.”

It continues: “We know new students have a lot going on in the run-up to starting their course. Applying before the deadline means they can plan for costs like rent, books and social activities such as Freshers’ Week, and have one less thing to worry about during exams.”

The application deadline for new Student Finance England students is Friday, May 15, 2026. Gov.uk has created a comprehensive guide to support first-time university applicants, alongside a separate guide explaining how the application process functions.

The Gov.uk website states: “Students should use these guides to make their application journey as smooth as possible.”

For new Student Finance Wales students, the closing date is Friday, May 29, 2026. Students can learn what to expect during the application process and access additional useful resources on Gov.uk’s Discover Student Finance page, reports the Express. New Student Finance Northern Ireland students face a deadline of Friday, April 30, 2026.

Parents and partners of new students must submit their details by the deadline when supporting an application. Failure to provide their information before the cut-off date may delay the student’s funding and could potentially reduce the sum they are awarded.

What is student finance?

UK student finance is a government-backed funding scheme intended to assist both undergraduate and postgraduate students in meeting their university tuition fees and everyday living costs. It principally consists of loans that require repayment, including a Tuition Fee Loan paid directly to the institution and a Maintenance Loan to help with routine living expenses. You could be entitled to student finance to support you throughout your studies at university or college. For example, you may be able to apply for:

  • a Tuition Fee Loan to help pay the course tuition fees charged by your university or college
  • a Maintenance Loan to help pay for things like rent, food, books, travel and other living costs

Tuition Fee Loans are paid directly to your university or college. Maintenance Loans are transferred straight into your bank account. Any loan you take out will need to be repaid, though not until you have finished or withdrawn from your course, and only once your income surpasses a specified threshold.

Further financial support may also be available to you, for instance, if you are on a low income, have a disability or have dependant children. You will generally not be required to pay back this additional assistance. Student finance may still be accessible even if you were not originally from the UK.

Student finance is currently undergoing significant changes. If your course commences on or after January 1, 2027, find out what you could be entitled to receive. If you are an existing student or have previously created an account, simply sign in to your current account. Once repayment of your loan starts, your monthly repayment sum will be calculated based on your earnings, not the overall amount borrowed. Interest charges begin accruing on the loan from the date of disbursement.

Student loans are not recorded on credit reports and will have no effect on your credit rating. However, lenders may consider them when conducting affordability assessments for alternative types of borrowing, such as a mortgage.
