Female artists dominate the heartbreak charts
Nearly a third of people would release a breakup track or album if they had the chance, according to new research. Inspired by the reaction to Lily Allen’s West End Girl, viagogo commissioned a poll of 2,000 UK adults to explore how the nation turns to music during moments of emotional upheaval.
Nearly half believe their past relationships could inspire a song, while 39% say they’ve experienced a split dramatic enough to fill an entire album. The research also found seven in ten believe the best songs are born from real heartbreak, while over half say it’s messy or chaotic endings that produce the tracks people keep coming back to.
The research also revealed the ingredients of the perfect breakup anthem: a runtime of 3 minutes and 2 seconds, lyrics focused on empowerment and moving on, and a bedroom listening session after a split. Female artists dominated the heartbreak charts, with 32% saying women make the best breakup songs, compared to 11% for men, while tracks including Adele’s Someone Like You and Beyoncé’s Irreplaceable among the songs Brits turn to most after a breakup.
viagogo is giving heartbroken music fans the chance to step into the studio and turn those experiences into professionally produced tracks alongside PATCH – the producer who has worked with Simon Cowell’s hit Netflix boyband, December 10 – and a team of established songwriters and artists.
Across three studio dates participants will collaborate with professional producers, vocalists and songwriters to transform personal stories into fully produced songs – professionally recorded, ready to share online and available to release on Spotify.
The production team also includes British songwriter Conan Mac who has collaborated with the likes of Bastille, Lucky Love and Issac Frank.
PATCH said: “Everyone has a story worth soundtracking. People don’t always realise how much emotion they’re carrying until they start talking about it. Breakups are universal, but the way people experience them is incredibly personal. Music has always been something people turn to during breakups.”
