There are 17 Brambly Hedge character sculptures for children to find

North London boasts plenty of particularly lovely outdoor spaces worth exploring. With beautiful countryside and ancient woodlands, there’s so much to discover right on the capital’s doorstep.

One attraction that launched last year is ideal for families with young children. A sculpture trail, inspired by the Brambly Hedge book series, takes visitors through the historic Epping Forest.

The walking route starts in Chingford and leads visitors towards Connaught Water in Loughton, and is easy enough for the whole family to enjoy without little legs getting too tired – and plenty of whimsical sculptures along the way to keep young children entertained.

Seventeen sculptures are waiting to be discovered, featuring beloved characters from the Brambly Hedge books by author Jill Barklem, first published in 1980. They celebrate her inspiration for the world of Brambly Hedge, which came from the hedgerows and trees of Epping Forest, explains EssexLive.

When the trail first launched, Caroline Haines, Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, said: “This new trail is a wonderful addition to the wide range of family-friendly activities in Epping Forest. It offers an inclusive and engaging way for visitors of all ages and abilities to connect with nature across ‘the green lungs of London’.”

She added: “With over one million trees, some of which are up to 1,000 years old, it’s easy to see where Jill Barklem found her inspiration – and I am confident it will spark a sense of discovery and enjoyment for many more generations to come.”

Jill Barklem’s daughter, Lizzie, said: “This wonderful sculpture trail is a very fitting part of the celebrations for the 45th anniversary of Brambly Hedge. Jill drew huge inspiration from Epping Forest and we hope that the trail will inspire more generations of families to spend time outside throughout the seasons, and stop to look a little deeper into the beauty and intricate detail of this remarkable woodland.”

Those wanting to start their Brambly Hedge adventure can visit the Epping Forest Visitor Centre, where trail packs are on sale for £3 each. Each pack contains a leaflet, an interactive map, and a themed pencil. Children who successfully find all 17 characters can return to the Centre to collect their exclusive “completer’s” sticker.
