Multiple people are seriously injured, the Metropolitan Police said
Five people, including a 14-year-old, are in hospital with serious injuries after a ‘stolen car’ crashed during a police chase through Goodmayes. Patrolling officers began pursuing the ‘nicked’ vehicle at around 12.30am this morning (Saturday, May 16) when it failed to stop.
Minutes later, the driver – a woman in her 20s – and four passengers ploughed into a second car at the junction of High Road and Barley Lane. Paramedics treated nine people at the scene before rushing six for further assessment.
The driver of the second car, two of their passengers and a moped driver were all treated by London Ambulance Service (LAS). Those who sustained serious injuries are aged between 14 and 46 years old, the Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement this afternoon.
Whilst enquiries remain ongoing, officers have arrested the driver of the suspect car on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft and failing to stop. She remains in hospital.
Her four passengers – a woman in her 40s, a teenage girl, and two men in their 20s – were also arrested on suspicion of being in a stolen vehicle. They too remain in hospital.
High Road is currently shut in both directions between Goodmayes Road and Eccleston Crescent, with two bus routes on diversion. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
Several advanced paramedics, as well as London’s Air Ambulance, were sent to the horror crash site. An LAS spokesperson added: ” We were called today (Saturday 16) at 12.34am to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Barley Lane and Goodmayes Road, Ilford.
“We sent a number of resources including ambulance crews, an incident response officer, our joint response unit, an advanced paramedic practitioner, members of our Hazardous Areas Response Team (HART) and London’s air ambulance.”
