This seaside town shows that you can change your reputation

Summer is coming, and getting out of London for a day trip or two is a must. Thankfully, Londoners have access to plenty of places within a short train or car ride.

Whether it’s beaches along the Kent coastline that leave you in awe or venturing through Essex to marvel at the stunning shoreline, you aren’t short of options. Also, even those areas that used to be ignored have made a resurgence in recent years. That is the case for this spot on the Sussex coastline.

TimeOut has Hastings and St Leonards rated as the second-best seaside destination to visit in Britain in 2026 and the number-one coastal spot to visit in England.

Both were associated for many years with deprivation and just generally being a bit run down, but with many Londoners moving down to the East Sussex location in recent years, it seems the area has seen an uptick.

The shingle beaches are a major part of what makes the area great, bringing a sense of serenity and charm. Pretty buildings stretch along the coastline, with sloping hills in the background.

Hastings and St Leonards are sister towns home to several art galleries, boutique stores, restaurants, and everything in between.

In Hastings, its historic Old Town is worth a visit, bursting with independent shops, art galleries, and museums, giving you a chance to explore its history. Narrow streets, old pubs, landmarks and cobbled roads make Hastings a worthy adventure. Family-owned FILO is tucked away in Old Town, cosy yet serving delicious food.

Hastings Castle, built by William the Conqueror, still stands, so there’s plenty there for you if history is your thing.

Galleries are everywhere, from Hastings Museum Gallery to independent cinemas, and restaurants fill out the rest of the town, which is full of history. There is also the Cliff Railways, which gives you a chance to ascend the sloping cliffs, and take in the town’s most remarkable views, stretching round to Beachy Head in the west and out across the Channel.

If the weather picks up, eating and drinking on the seafront is a must. The Jolly Fisherman is a highly rated pub a few metres from Stade Beach, praised by reviewers for being tiny but with a great selection of beers.

For a place to grab a coffee, then look no further than Dragon Bar or The Jenny Lind for delicious food, great drinks and views of the sea.

However, what makes Hastings great is the fact that St Leonards is only a walk away along the promenade. St Leonards has a different vibe from Hastings, considered more bohemian and trendy.

St. Leonards prides itself on its trendy nature, and that is clear when you see the types of galleries that call it home, from Lucy Bell to Stella Dore.

Vintage boutique stores, local food spots and a ‘quieter’ beach at St Leonards all make it a worthy sister to balance Hastings. Colombo House, a modern Sri Lankan restaurant, is highly rated, and the aptly named The St. Leonard’s Pub is also a worthwhile stop while visiting.

On top of that, the journey from London to Hastings takes just under 90 minutes by car or train. A direct train from London Bridge to Hastings, around £16 if booked in advance, makes for a great-value trip that isn’t too far away.
