A Volkswagen driver from East London has been charged with causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving

07:11, 20 May 2026Updated 07:28, 20 May 2026

A passenger killed in a late-night car crash on a Barnet high street has been named for the first time.

Sheikh Ayyub Sultan Luchmum, aged in his 20s, died when a Volkswagen Golf and Nissan Qashqai collided in Whetstone on May 14.

Emergency services attended the junction of High Road and Chandos Avenue at around 11.30pm, where Mr Luchmum had sustained life-threatening injuries in the front seat of the Volkswagen. He died at the scene a short time later.

Two rear passengers of the same car, a man and a woman in their 20s, were taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening and life-changing injuries. They have now been discharged, the Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement.

Officers arrested the 20-year-old driver of the Volkswagen on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. Hasan Hussain, of Tyndall Road, Leyton, has since been charged with three counts and appeared at Highbury Magistrates’ Court yesterday (May 19).

He has been bailed to next appear at Harrow Crown Court on Tuesday, June 16. Mr Luchmum’s next-of-kin continue to be supported by specialist officers with the Met.

The driver of the Nissan, a woman in her 20s, was also taken to hospital and has too since been discharged.

Anyone with relevant information or footage is urged to call police on 101, quoting CAD 8744/14MAY26. Alternatively, contact the North Serious Collision Investigation Unit witness line via 0207 960 8044.
