Pizza Hut in Charlton Village has applied to sell delivery pizza until 1am during the week and 2am on weekends
A South London Pizza Hut wants to extend its opening hours but one resident living opposite the shop said the longer hours would be “simply antisocial.”
She also claimed to have witnessed delivery drivers urinating in a driveway near to the fast food takeaway chain. However, this has not been verified.
Pizza Hut in Charlton Village currently sells delivery pizza until 12.30am. It has applied to Greenwich Council to alter its premises licence and extend its late night hours until 1am Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The opening hours to the public will remain at 11am to midnight. The extra time Pizza Hut is seeking will be to allow delivery businesses like Uber Eats and Deliveroo to deliver food to customers at home.
Greenwich Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee C will consider the application on May 28. Only one resident officially objected to Pizza Hut’s proposal.
Charlton Village resident Stephanie Godbold said the opening hours extension would create an “unacceptable noise nuisance to residents.”
She said: “I appreciate some level of activity and associated noise needs to be tolerated by residents of a high street, but an extension until 2am is simply antisocial. Delivery bikes representing multiple operators already serve Pizza Hut—noisily—until midnight some nights.
“There are several establishments offering delivery in The Village, and the existing level of compounded noise, over a long business day, is enough.”
Ms Godbold also raised concerns about the behaviour of delivery drivers in Charlton Village near her home.
She said: “Adding to my concerns is the fact that delivery drivers are currently using the private driveway belonging to 34-44 The Village to park their bikes while waiting for orders.
“This not only hinders residents’ access to their homes and use of the driveway, but means the noise is even closer to where people are living (or, more to the point, sleeping) than it would be if they parked on the road.
“I’ve also witnessed drivers urinating up the driveway. While I can’t say definitively that these are drivers serving Pizza Hut, longer delivery hours will increase the window within which such wrongful use of private facilities, and antisocial (illegal) behaviour, is possible.”
Cllr Jo Van Den Broek, ward councillor for Charlton Village and Riverside, also objected to the application on behalf of residents living nearby Pizza Hut.
She said: “They already suffer from noise and disturbance from the delivery bikes way into the night and additional time will take that disturbance into the small hours. There are also complaints about where the bikes park—right under residents’ windows.”
Police raised no objections to the premises licence application. The Met did raise some concerns, but proposed that if Pizza Hut recorded CCTV footage throughout its opening hours it would not object. Pizza Hut agreed to the CCTV request.
