Commuters faced significant travel disruption on Sunday evening after a blaze near a London station forced services to be halted.

Footage from the scene on Cottrill Gardens, near Hackney Central, captured towering flames and dense black smoke rising into the sky.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that vehicles, a caravan, an embankment, sheds and terraced houses were all caught up in the inferno, reports the Mirror.

Approximately 60 firefighters rushed to tackle the blaze after being called to the scene at around 6.10pm, with crews dispatched from Homerton, Leyton, Whitechapel and neighbouring stations.

London Fire Brigade stated: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a fire on Cottrill Gardens in Hackney. A static caravan and two cars are alight, as well as part of a grass embankment.”

In an update, LFB said: “The fire in Hackney is now under control. There are currently no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.”

Transport for London confirmed travellers faced severe delays persist on the Weaver Line, with services between Stratford and Gospel Oak on the Mildmay Line suspended after the incident.

The Central Line also experienced minor delays following a fire alert at Leytonstone.

The fire service has since confirmed that the blaze was brought under control by 8.42pm, with an investigation now launched to establish the cause. No injuries have been reported at this stage. It states: “Control Officers took the first of over 20 calls at 1810 and mobilised crews from Homerton, Leyton, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 2042. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, who attended the scene, said: “Firefighters worked hard in hot weather to tackle this fire in Hackney.

“The fire affected a static caravan, two scrap cars and a 25 metre embankment along a train line, as well as three sheds and some fencing. The fire also caused a small amount of damage to two mid terraced houses and a garage. Nine people left two properties before the Brigade arrived. There are no reports of any injuries.

“As a precaution, power to the train line was isolated whilst firefighting was ongoing. The Brigade’s Drone Team were deployed to the scene and provided the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire.

“Control Officers took over 20 calls to this incident and mobilised crews from Homerton, Leyton, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations to the scene.”

Travel disruption after the fire has now cleared, according to National Rail.
