Millions of Londoners will enjoy days of scorching sunshine
It’s been a steaming Bank Holiday weekend already, as temperatures on Saturday reached their hottest of the year so far with a peak of 30.5C in Frittenden, Kent – the first place in the UK to gain a temperature above 30C in 2026.
But the weather will be even hotter today (Sunday), with highs of 32C predicted in London and the South East, according to the Met Office, and temperatures are expected to rise even further on Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday, with peaks of 34C possible on both days .
Amber heat alerts across London, the South East and East Midlands will be in place until Wednesday, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) stated. Records could be broken for the hottest May day in the UK and England, which currently stands at 32.8C, with those out and about advised to wear sun cream to protect their skin.
Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said there will be “plentiful amounts of sunshine for the vast majority” of people on Sunday, with most seeing “wall-to-wall sunshine”.
He continued: “That extra sunshine once again allowing those temperatures to climb even further and so now we’re expecting to see around 33C in the far south-east of London but quite broadly a potential for 30C into parts of northern England, areas of Wales and right throughout the Midlands as well.”
The Met Office states that the Bank Holiday weekend will see an “exceptional spell of warmth for May” with a notable heatwave forecast.
Deputy chief forecaster Steve Kocher added: “Temperatures are forecast to peak on Monday when we could see 33°C recorded in southern England and the Midlands. It is likely that the May and Spring UK temperature records will be broken over the Bank Holiday weekend… As well as it being hot, there will be lots of dry and sunny weather for much of the UK.”
On top of the current hot weather, they’re could be a heat wave at the end of next week as well. In London and much of southern England, this means three days on the trot of highs of 28C or higher. This will be the case, according to The Met Office, between Thursday and Saturday (May 28 and 30).
