A young girl clung to a window ledge above a busy high street shop in East London as onlookers watched anxiously below — before she was caught and brought to safety in just nine minutes
The heart-stopping moment a toddler dangled from a ledge in London has been captured on camera, leaving horrified onlookers powerless to do anything but watch from below.
The footage shows a young girl clinging to a window ledge above a bustling high street shop before losing her grip entirely.
The youngster was seen hanging above a pawnbroker’s shop on Ilford High Road in East London, as a crowd gathered to witness the nail-biting scenes unfold.
Bystanders watched helplessly from the street below as the girl held on with everything she had.
At one point, a distressed woman appeared from a lower window, calling up to the child, while a police officer and a member of the public worked frantically to carry out the rescue.
A shirtless man, wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, positioned himself directly beneath the girl, who stood alongside an officer who had rushed to the scene.
Both men were on the roof at the precise moment the young girl’s grip finally gave way.
Gasps rang out from the crowd during this gut-wrenching moment as the child fell from the ledge.
Fortunately, the member of the public managed to catch the girl, with both of them steadied by the police officer.
The crowd erupted with a wave of relief, breaking into cheers and words of encouragement. The girl was subsequently passed back through the lower window from which the woman had appeared.
Both the man and the police officer then embraced as the crowd broke into applause.
The Met Police confirmed that officers were called to the scene shortly after 3.20pm on Tuesday, following reports of concerns for a child’s safety.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to Ilford High Road at 15:23hrs on Tuesday, June 9, following concerns for the safety of a child climbing onto a window ledge.
“The girl was bought to safety by 15:32hrs by an attending officer and member of the public.
