Dan Jarvis, a former Parachute Regiment officer once known as the “steely-eyed messenger of death”, has been appointed defence secretary, a role that could test his reputation for calm amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and a contentious debate over defence spending.
The nickname originated not from his distinguished military service but four years into his political career after a confrontation on the Tube.
As Mr Jarvis recounted in 2015, a “drunk and aggressive” man threatened to break a bottle over his head if he did not surrender his wallet.
The response “that’s not going to happen” and a brief standoff saw the would-be mugger back off, and friendly MPs began referring to the former major with a new, sinister nickname.
The 53-year-old’s appointment as defence secretary, which began to be rumoured in Westminster not long after John Healey’s shock resignation on Thursday, is perhaps a logical progression for a man who has now spent as much time in politics as in uniform.
Born in Nottingham in 1972, Mr Jarvis attended Sandhurst straight from his international politics degree at Aberystwyth University, commissioning into the Parachute Regiment in 1997.
Over the next 14 years, he served in major theatres including the Balkans, West Africa, and the Middle East.
As a platoon commander in Kosovo in 1999, he was at Pristina Airport when General Sir Mike Jackson famously refused to confront Russian forces, telling his American superior: “Sir, I’m not going to start World War Three for you.” Mr Jarvis, who went on to become General Jackson’s personal staff officer, later described the incident as “a very surreal moment in my life”.
His deployments also included Sierra Leone in 2000, where he helped the Army learn lessons from the capture of a group of British soldiers who were later rescued in a joint SAS-Parachute Regiment operation unofficially nicknamed “Operation Certain Death”.
He was also deployed to Iraq in 2003 and Afghanistan in 2005 and 2006, where he carried out some of the initial reconnaissance of Helmand Province. As a major, he later completed a six-month tour in Afghanistan as company commander with 1 Para, part of the UK’s Special Forces Support Group.
In 2011, Mr Jarvis left the Army after being selected as Labour’s candidate for the Barnsley Central by-election, following Eric Illsley’s imprisonment for fraud during the expenses scandal.
A party member since 18, his selection hinged on a moment of luck. After coming joint second in the penultimate round of voting, he only proceeded to the final vote after drawing lots. In that final round he defeated Richard Burgon, now MP for Leeds East and secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group, before comfortably winning the by-election with 60 per cent of the vote.
Within seven months, he was appointed to Ed Miliband’s front bench, serving as a shadow culture minister and later becoming shadow youth justice and victims minister. Following Mr Miliband’s resignation in 2015, Mr Jarvis was briefly considered a potential leader by some within the party, but quickly ruled it out, citing family priorities.
He did not serve on Jeremy Corbyn’s front bench, and became the first directly elected mayor of the Sheffield City Region in 2018, while remaining an MP.
During his single term as mayor, he tackled the Covid pandemic, establishing a £500m recovery fund. In 2021, he announced he would not seek re-election in the South Yorkshire mayoral contest. In 2023 he became shadow security minister and then took on the job for real on Labour’s return to power in 2024. In that role, he has again been responsible for protecting Britain from its enemies, working with the security services to tackle foreign spies, cyber attacks and terrorism.
Beyond politics, Mr Jarvis is an accomplished endurance runner. When asked about hobbies during his first election campaign, he modestly replied: “I like the odd run.” This was an understatement for a man who has completed 16 marathons, including 13 in London and three in Snowdonia, and the gruelling 250km, six-day Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert.
He now takes on a Ministry of Defence facing a fight with the Treasury over funding and questions over how Britain’s armed forces should adapt to the changing nature of war. It is a daunting in-tray, but Mr Jarvis’s past – from combat to desert marathons – shows he is no stranger to a challenge.
