The upcoming Blair Witch Project reboot has finally landed a release date – with the horror film slated to arrive in cinemas on 24 September 2027.
The news was announced by Lionsgate via a suitably eerie teaser posted on social media, which consisted entirely of crackly black and white footage showing that date formed out of twigs hanging from a tree.
The project – which will be toe fourth film in the franchise altogether – was first announced at CinemaCon back in 2024, when Lionsgate film chair Adam Fogelson called it “a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation”.
Initially, none of the filmmaking team from the original had been involved, which had been the cause of some annoyance from both fans and the filmmakers themselves.
However, that was rectified earlier this year when it was revealed that original’s directing team of Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, plus stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C Williams and producer Gregg Hale, will all be serving as executive producers.
Young director Dylan Clark – who does not yet have a feature credit to his name but has had major success with various short films – will be helming the project.
Clark has rewritten an original script by Chris Thomas Devlin, who previously penned 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, with Williams explaining on social media that this new take on the franchise is “not a ‘remake'”.
The first Blair With Project became a major low-budget sensation when it was released in 1999, becoming perhaps the most lauded found footage film ever made – and kicking off a major trend for further examples in the genre.
Neither 2000 sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 or 2016’s reboot Blair Witch received anything like this acclaim of that first entry, but fans will be hoping that this new chapter can represent a return to form.
There’s no official word yet on plot or cast details for the new one, but we’ll be looking out for all the latest developments and will be sure to keep you updated as and when concrete news arrives.
