It will cost roughly four per cent extra to use both East London river crossings
Transport for London has confirmed plans to increase Silvertown and Blackwall tunnel charges in September. The changes will see car tolls increase from £4 to £4.20 during peak hours, and from £1.50 to £1.55 at off-peak times.
Charges are in place between 6am and 10pm every day of the week, with motorists made to pay more at busier times from 6am to 10am northbound and 4pm to 7pm southbound. Other peak time increases include motorcycle journeys rising from £2.50 to £2.60 and large van crossings rising from £6.50 to £6.80.
Agenda papers from TfL’s finance committee on June 18 state prices are going up to account for inflation. The authority has ruled out increasing the £180 fine for failing to pay the toll, which is reduced to £90 if paid within two weeks.
It also said there will be no changes to the 50 per cent discount for low income residents, or the business discount which will continue as a £1 discount on the new off-peak user charges. TfL expects to raise an extra £1.5m between September and the end of March next year from the toll increase.
TfL is currently consulting with councils in East and South East London about the revised increases, which are about four per cent. In March fares on the London Underground, Elizabeth line, Overground and DLR went up by 5.8 per cent.
Silvertown Tunnel opened in April last year to ease congestion on roads across East and South East London. It also reduced the strain on nearby Blackwall Tunnel, but meant a toll was introduced on the latter tunnel for the first time since it opened in 1897.
