Unilever has received a stark warning from a coroner after one of its long-serving scientists died by suicide, having suffered intense work-related stress.
Moira Parker, 54, a dedicated microbiologist who had worked for the consumer goods giant for 37 years, took her own life after battling a long-term illness exacerbated by intense workplace pressure.
Despite being open about her struggles, which included debilitating panic attacks and memory loss, she was not offered an occupational health referral.
A coroner has now issued a formal warning to Unilever, urging the company to enhance staff training to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Ms Parker was based in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, and worked in Unilever’s research and development department, a role she “loved”, for nearly four decades.
Unilever is a global supplier of household brands, including Dove, Hellmann’s, and Ben & Jerry’s.
Since 2022, Ms Parker had been experiencing unexplained symptoms including memory loss and a cognitive decline.
She was put on hormone therapy, and while it initially helped, the symptoms did not clear up.
The scientist started raising issues with managers about her workload, including that her working hours had increased.
She told higher-ups she was “struggling” on at least three occasions – December 2022, March 2023 and October 2024.
A “marked change in her demeanour was noticed by management” in January 2025, as she “appeared withdrawn and anxious”, according to the coroner.
On 5 February 2025 Ms Parker told her GP about “an escalation of her memory issues, panic attacks, feelings of being unable to cope [and] burnt out”.
The following day she went off sick from work – but despite the fact that she was “open about her health issues and work-related pressures”, an occupational health referral was not made by management until 14 February 2025, after she had already gone on sick leave.
Ms Parker had another GP appointment on 20 February, where causes for her symptoms were discussed.
A CT scan showed nothing, but a blood test identified small irregularities and she was given medication to deal with them.
A referral was made to the Memory Assessment Service for further investigation, but Ms Parker was found dead on 11 April 2025.
She had left home that morning, telling her husband she was going to the GP to get a fit note.
However, she had left letters behind which Bina Patel, the area coroner for Bedfordshire and Luton, cited in a warning to Unilever.
The coroner warned the multinational that there needs to be more “knowledge and training” so that “support is available” for its staff.
Ms Patel concluded: “From the contents of the letters left by Moira and the evidence heard at the inquest, Moira raised concerns over a protracted period of time from July 2022 to October 2024 and a referral was not made to occupational health which would have triggered the use of the stress risk assessment and provided support both for Moira and those within the management team at Unilever.
“I am not satisfied staff have sufficient knowledge and training about the circumstances in which an occupational health referral can be made and the support that is available.”
