It’s about 90 minutes from London

London, renowned for its vibrancy, is bursting with natural beauty, even carrying the distinction of being an ‘urban forest’.

The sprawling capital boasts an remarkable 21% tree coverage, with iconic green havens such as Hyde Park and Richmond Park offering tranquil retreats from its hustle and bustle.

But there are times when we just need something even more peaceful, and a wander through West Sussex’s enchanting tree tunnel might be the perfect little day trip, just 90 minutes from Central London.

The Halnaker tree tunnel, tucked away near Chichester in a peaceful Sussex village, is accessible from a nearby lay-by. This captivating tree-canopied pathway offers an almost otherworldly departure from the everyday.

As you venture along the track, which rises on a gentle incline, you’re lured deeper into a leafy passage that’s beautiful year-round, appearing equally breathtaking during the crisp autumn and winter periods as it does under the warm summer rays.

Beginning from Mill Lane, the route leads walkers towards the notable Halnaker Windmill, a prominent feature in the Sussex landscape.

Located just 3.5 miles from Chichester, the pathway offers peace and quietude within convenient reach of city facilities. Those who venture along its path are rewarded with breathtaking panoramas at every turn, with many visitors enthusiastically photographing what has been affectionately dubbed a “magical” trail.

The walk has gained such renown that it’s become a firm favourite amongst professional photographers – one of whom recently claimed the Landscape Photographer of the Year award.

The path winds its way through woodland, ascending towards Halnaker Hill, where further stunning scenery and picture-perfect moments await.

Despite having undergone several restorations throughout the years, the mill maintains its considerable appeal as it peers out above the charming woodland beneath. Regularly celebrated as one of the finest walks across the South East, it’s well worth making the short journey to see it for yourself.

To get there by car, the M23, A23 and A24 provide a straightforward route from London, taking roughly 90 minutes, though securing a parking space may prove somewhat tricky. West Sussex County Council recommends several convenient parking alternatives nearby.

For those preferring public transport, a train to Chichester followed by a local bus to Halnaker offers a viable alternative, with the total journey taking between two and two-and-a-half hours.
