Harry Kane has caught the eye of the US President after England’s win against Mexico in the World Cup round of 16
Captain Harry Kane is in the running for the World Cup Golden Boot after scoring his sixth goal against Mexico – where he caught the attention of Donald Trump.
The England team have secured their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals this year after a rather tense and drama-filled face-off against Mexico on their home turf in the Estadio Azteca.
Kicking off at 2am BST this morning (Monday, July 6), Thomas Tuchel’s side managed to bag the victory in a 3-2 defeat against Mexico, after Jude Bellingham scored two within 98 seconds before the half-time whistle.
But it was Kane’s 60th-minute penalty goal that secured the win. The Bayern Munich striker’s performance was even recognised by the White House, as the American president took to social media to praise the captain. Trump wrote: “Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player.”
Kane’s goal came after Julian Quinones cut the deficit before the break and Raul Jimenez scored from the spot to make it 3-2, but England set up a quarter-final date with Norway despite having Jarell Quansah sent off after 54 minutes.
Kane, England’s record World Cup goalscorer, is one behind Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
England players celebrated by joining the fans in a rendition of the Oasis hit ‘Wonderwall’, which has become their World Cup anthem.
Kane had lost his voice after the game and struggled to speak in a post-match BBC interview, saying: “Unbelievable support. Speechless.
“My voice is gone. I’ve just been singing there. I can’t really talk.”
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher wrote on X: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.”
