The breed has been considered easy to care for
Certain dog breeds are considered ideal family pets due to their temperament and appearance. Smaller dogs have proven particularly popular for being adorable, needing less space, requiring reduced exercise and costing less to feed.
While there’s no shortage of breeds available, one veterinary professional has raised concerns about a particular type. They’ve warned that one of Britain’s most beloved dogs may not be as straightforward to care for as believed.
Dr Suzanne Moyes, working alongside Green Pantry, issued a caution to prospective Cockapoo owners. The breed has experienced enormous popularity in recent years, though there are several health concerns they can face.
Dr Moyes said: “Small breeds like Cockapoos are especially popular, not just for their adorable looks but also for their affectionate and friendly nature.
“These dogs have big personalities and make excellent companions, particularly for families seeking a loving and loyal pet.”
However, potential health complications remain a worry for these animals.
According to Waggel, Cockapoos typically have a lifespan of approximately 12-15 years. Their longevity is considerably influenced by genetics, general health and diet.
Identifying one major health concern affecting Cockapoos, Dr Moyes highlighted obesity as a significant issue.
The vet recommended: “This is easily remedied with a healthy and balanced diet and ensuring everybody is aligned on what the dog should and should not be fed.
“As tempting as it can be to slip your pet some food from your plate, this is one of the leading causes of obesity in dogs, and it can, in turn, lead to other health issues such as joint issues and diabetes.”
Another concern affecting Cockapoos is hip dysplasia, a frequently inherited condition where the hip joint forms incorrectly, resulting in instability and pain.
Dr Moyes continued: “Hip dysplasia is an issue that can be exacerbated by obesity. While you can’t always prevent joint problems such as hip dysplasia, there is much you can do to help.
“For example, try to ensure they get regular exercise, and you could consider complementary therapeutic regimes such as hydrotherapy or laser therapy.”
The vet clarified that while it’s important to be aware of these conditions, they won’t necessarily affect every dog.
Each animal is unique, so while some may experience these issues, with proper attentive care, they can still enjoy fulfilling, healthy lives.
