This 18th century pub shaded under London Bridge offer a naturally cooling haven to escape the heatwave
The heat is rising. We’re hot under the collar, sunbathers are showing skin on every corner and our lips are parched for an ice cool drink…
Nope, this isn’t the Canary Islands but London in July 2026, sauntering in its second heatwave of the summer in temperatures that would have been unimaginable a few years ago.
For those looking for a chilled getaway in these burning times, one gem of a pub in London may be the perfect destination. The Mug House ale and port house under London Bridge dates from the 18th century and is said to have “the historic feel of a Dickens novel with pewter tankards hanging from a characterful bar.”
But it’s selling point right now? The Mug House’s location under the shade of London Bridge offers a natural cooling point away from the sweltering climes of central London, as well as modern air conditioning.
The bar itself is decorated in classic wood panelling, with rustic wooden furniture and equally archaic hanging lamps – giving it just as much of an oldie worlde atmosphere as Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese and Prospect of Whitby.
The Mug House has a wide selection of craft beers and a diverse wine list, as well as a food menu focused on traditional British cooking with seasonal ingredients.
The Mug House is run by Davy’s Bars, which describes it as “brimming with its own special character and charm” and filled with “antique curiosities and historic wine artefacts, collected over decades”, while “candlelit tables contribute to the warm, cosy atmosphere.”
And it seems visitors are enchanted with the pub’s cooling vibes. One TripAdvisor reviewer described it as “atmospheric and a lovely treat… The place provides for a nice, cool (temperature as well) and atmospheric place (dark and cellar-like) to have really lovely food… It offers ‘Old Wallop’ or ales in lovely tankards that add to the experience. The staff were friendly and helpful.”
Another said: “The Mug House fits anyone’s idea of Dickens’ London exceedingly well. It’s cool and dark (but hey, much brighter than Gordon’s Wine Bar in Charing Cross) and has little shelves with interesting looking bottles. It does an excellent cheeseboard.”
