A 20-year-old woman has been charged with arson over a wildfire which has been burning since Saturday near Manchester.
Shania Care-Slede, of Hyde, was arrested on Monday and has now been charged with aggravated arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered, and dangerous driving.
She has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire, near the Dovestone Reservoir, broke out on the weekend and has since been declared a major incident.
It is one of three significant wildfires affecting Manchester, with many in the city reporting smoke and the smell of burning.
In Derbyshire, a major incident was declared on Sunday at Tintwistle Moor, where a persistent blaze, which ignited on 24 June, has already consumed more than 240 hectares (600 acres) of woodland and moorland.
Meanwhile, smoke from a wildfire near Conwy Mountain in north Wales has drifted across Greater Manchester, prompting the evacuation of 36 homes.
While the North Wales fire and rescue service stood down its major incident declaration on Monday, crews remain on site to monitor conditions.
The National Fire Chiefs Council reports that 19 wildfires are currently active across England and Wales.
Greater Manchester Police said that the Dovestone Reservoir blaze remains under investigation, with officers looking to identify anyone else who may have been involved.
Detective Inspector Andrew Day said: “While we have secured charges against one individual, our investigation remains ongoing. Detectives are carefully reviewing all available evidence to identify anyone else who may have been involved in criminality linked to this incident.
“We’re committed to pursuing all those responsible.
“I would also like to thank the public for the support they have shown so far and encourage anyone with information or footage that may assist our enquiries to come forward.”
The force urged the public to avoid speculation online, as criminal proceedings are now active.
It also said that the community had shared a “significant amount” of video footage, which detectives are meticulously reviewing.
Anyone with further footage or information that may assist the investigation is being asked to submit it via the Dovestones Fire Evidence Submission Portal.
