A driver who caused the deaths of a couple in a West London collision and fled the scene has pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter. Maninder Singh Brar, 28, was driving on the M4 westbound at Junction 4, Hillingdon, on Monday, 1 June, when police received reports of a serious collision at 11.37pm.
A black BMW 320i driven by Brar had collided with a white VW Golf and left its occupants severely injured before making off. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Mohammad Hagila, 63, died at the scene. Mr Hagila’s wife Dil Jan Hagila, 62, also a passenger in the Golf, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition. She later died in hospital on Saturday, June 6.
A third person, a 29-year-old man, was also taken to hospital, where his injuries were found to be neither life-threatening or life-changing.
Brar, of Minterne Way, Hayes, was arrested on June 6 and remanded in custody. He appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday, July 15, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter, two counts of causing death whilst uninsured, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, handling stolen goods and failing to stop following a road traffic collision. Brar will be sentenced at the same court on Wednesday, August 23.
Acting Detective Inspector Fiaz Janjua, who led the Met’s investigation, said: “This is a truly tragic case in which two innocent members of the public have lost their lives.
“Our deepest sympathies and support remain with the family of Mohammed and Dil Jan, who have suffered an unimaginable loss. Our thoughts are with them as they face this incredibly painful and difficult time.
“The fact Brar has now pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter reflects the seriousness of his actions and the devastating consequences they had for those involved.
“This case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that dangerous driving can have and the profound, lasting harm it can cause to innocent road users, their families and the wider community.”
