Members of the public bravely chased the armed suspect away from the victim
A 37-year-old man is fighting for his life after a ‘shocking and brutal’ stabbing in Balham last night (Saturday, July 18). He was repeatedly knifed on Weir Road, a predominantly residential area near Clapham Park, at around 7.35pm.
Metropolitan Police officers provided first aid before paramedics rushed the victim to hospital. He remains in critical condition, the force said in a statement this afternoon.
Members of the public who witnessed the stabbing chased the male suspect away from the injured man before police arrived. Enquiries to identify and locate him are ongoing.
Detective Superintendent Gareth Gilbert, whose team is leading the investigation, said: “This was a shocking and brutal attack, carried out in broad daylight on a residential street. Our officers are working quickly to identify and arrest the attacker and it is imperative that anyone with information should come forward immediately.
“We recognise this incident will be deeply disturbing to the local community and want to reassure residents that they can expect to see an increased number of officers in the area over the coming days. We would also like to pay tribute to the members of the public who bravely chased the suspect away from the scene while he was still armed.”
Police shut Weir Road in both directions between Cavendish Road and Molly Huggins Close whilst the scene was secured. The cordon has since been removed.
Anyone with relevant information or footage is urged to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 6708/18Jul. Anonymous reports can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
