There are concerns footfall could plummet in Streatham once the M&S shuts
Streatham residents fear the closure of M&S next month will “create a massive gap on the high street.”
The upmarket food shop will open its doors for the last time on Saturday, August 15, M&S has confirmed.
A campaign has been launched following this announcement with almost 1,500 signing an online petition to help save it.
“This branch is an essential anchor for our community,” the contributing statement reads.
“It provides vital access to high-quality fresh food, serves as a crucial Click & Collect hub for local residents, and employs dedicated local staff members.
“While M&S operates a separate store on Streatham Hill, forcing residents—especially families, the elderly, and less mobile shoppers – is completely impractical.
“The new store in Tooting is not easy to access by public transport.
“The Streatham High Road location serves a completely distinct catchment area that relies on its convenience and accessibility every single day.”
Determined customers have urged the M&S leadership to reconsider their plans to shut Streatham’s ‘flagship’ which could hurt nearby small businesses which benefit from the footfall it drives up.
A spokesperson for the chain said: “We have however made the tough decision to close our Streatham High Road on Saturday 15th August.
“Sadly, we are not able to offer the shopping experience we want to for customers and the store’s performance has not been where it needs to be.”
