The weather in the second half of August could be a lot more unsettled
August could be plagued with thunderstorms, according to The Met Office. Its day-to-day forecast doesn’t stretch as far as August, but the long range one, which spans from Augsut 5 to August 19, shows that summer storms could be on the cards, though it cannot say, this far ahead, exactly where or when they may occur.
It says that ‘occasional summertime thunderstorms are possible on some days given the right ingredients’. But it also doesn’t rule out sticky heat with the mercury ‘very likely remain above normal, with potential for further hot spells, particularly in the south’.
The stormy prediction was also confirmed by Jim Dales of the British Weather Services. He told us that ‘the longer we go the chances of a breakdown with some severe thundery weather become higher’.
He added that there is a possibility that ‘Tube stations will flood’.
“We’ve seen it before,” he said. “Highly likely in the in the situation that we now find ourselves with climate change, with more than a 50 per cent chance of rain.”
Fourth heatwave
Jim didn’t stop there, though, and told MyLondon that ‘the fourth heatwave is on its way’. Things will ‘intensify’ from Monday (July 27) onwards, and it could reach a sweltering 34C.
London weather
Today (Wednesday, July 22) will start with some low cloud, mist and fog patches around, though these should lift readily during the morning to leave a fine day across the region with sunny spells. Feeling quite hot in the gentle winds. Maximum temperature will be 27C.
The fine weather will continue heading into the evening and overnight, says The Met Office. It will remain dry with clear spells, although some patches of low cloud and fog are possible. Minimum temperature 17C.
Tomorrow (July 23) will see low cloud or fog will clear to leave plenty of fine weather with sunny spells on Thursday. However, cloud could bubble up sufficiently in places to produce a light shower. Maximum temperature 27C.
And from Friday (July 24) to Sunday (July 26) the weather should remain fine on Friday with further very warm sunshine. However, the weekend looks slightly cooler and more breezy with the chance of some rain at times.
