A man was attacked after an England World Cup match. He was attacked on Gascoyne Road close to the junction with Bradstock Road, Hackney, at 1.12am on Saturday (July 12), hours after the Three Lions sent Norway packing in a 2-1 victory.
Police think the 24-year-old victim had a problem with another group while watching the match. One member of the group then attacked the victim, who was left with a serious head injury, which is not life-threatening, although he’s still in hospital.
No arrests have been made, and the attacker is at large. The police have released a picture of someone they want to speak to.
He is white, in his 20s or 30s, with light brown hair. He was wearing a blue and white England shirt with a navy collar.
Detective Sergeant Steve Rafferty, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a violent assault which has left a young man with serious injuries.
“Since launching our investigation, officers have carried out extensive enquiries, including analysing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
“The assault took placed after the England vs Norway World Cup match, and we know that the area was extremely busy at the time. As a result, there may be additional witnesses who can provide crucial information.
“We are releasing an image of a man, who we believe may have important information which could assist our investigation, and I would urge anyone who recognises him to get in touch with police.
“He’s described as a White man, believed to be in his 20s or 30s, with light brown hair. He was wearing a blue and white England shirt with a navy collar.
“If you were in the Gascoyne Road area during the early hours of 12 July, witnessed the incident, or have any information which could assist our enquiries, please come forward.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference CAD 600/12JUL.
