Steve Reed – MP for Streatham and Croydon North
Under Sir Keir Starmer, Reed served as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. He has been replaced by Angela Rayner.
Reed, a former leader of Lambeth Council, did not go quietly. In his parting letter, he said he had been loyal to Sir Keir Starmer and hoped “those who did not show loyalty to Keir will now show it to you”.
He talked of how he had made the effort to ensure London councils received a fair share of government funding during his time in office.
He warned the new prime minister: “You can’t make funding fairer for the rest of England by making it unfair on Londoners.”
David Lammy – MP for Tottenham
Lammy was the Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister under the previous government, and also held the role of foreign secretary.
The Tottenham MP, who has represented the constituency for 26 years, suggested in his departure letter that he would have not minded remaining at the top table for longer.
He said he “would have been proud to continue”, but accepted that “a new PM is entitled to build his own team”.
James Murray – MP for Ealing North
His feet had barely touched the ground as Health Secretary, having been in the job only since May.
He took over from another London MP, Wes Streeting, who resigned as part of a challenge to Sir Keir’s leadership.
Murray described it as an “immense honour” to have served as Health Secretary and wished his successor, Yvette Cooper, well adding that he knew she would do a “brilliant job”.
However, he is not out of government as the new prime minister appointed him to a junior Treasury role.
