Temperatures are set to cool for a few days before the next heatwave arrives

A fourth heatwave will hit London next week, once again warming the capital up beyond 30C. The last heatwave has lasted around 20 days but from Sunday (July 26) temperatures are going to cool down a bit before rising again next week.

The UK is in one of the longest spells of hot and dry weather ever, with warnings up and down the country for wildfires after weeks without any significant rain. London’s numerous parks have been left brown and scorched, while trees have been shedding leaves due to the excessive heat and lack of water.

The capital is currently under a yellow heat warning from the Met Office, but that will end at 9am on Sunday morning. Cooler and fresher air will come as a relief to many, with temperature highs dropping below 25C and much colder mornings and evenings.

But the heat will climb again at start of the week, with Monday’s high forecast at 27C in the South East, just below the area’s heatwave threshold of 28C.

Heatwave thresholds will start to be topped the following day, with highs of more than 30C expected until Thursday in the South East. But next week’s heatwave may not be the last of the summer, the Met Office’s long-range forecast suggests.

“(The weather) is a bit more changeable in the short term, but as we head more into August, there are hints that conditions will settle down and become drier again”, the Met Office’s senior operational meteorologist Marco Petagna has said.

Wildfires continue to burn across the Rhinogydd mountains, North Wales, and Blaenavon, South Wales, with the latter affecting 220 hectares. The past days have also seen blazes on healthland on the Isle of Wight, woodland in the New Forest and fields in Tadley, Hampshire.

Massive forest fires have forced the evacuation of 200,000 people in south-western France and central Spain as flames raged out of control. Firefighters in Spain admitted the fires were so fast and violent that they could not be tackled head on.
