The Odyssey is sold out for all 173 showings at BFI IMAX until September 10
A few tickets remain available to see Christopher Noland’s epic ‘The Odyssey’ on one of London’s two IMAX cinemas, after huge demand has seen cinemas fully booked up for two months. . As MyLondon reported last week, the BFI IMAX at Waterloo (Britain’s biggest screen) is fully booked for all 173 showings of The Odyssey until September 10.
The capital’s other IMAX cinema screen at London’s Science Museum (The Ronson Theatre) still has some tickets left, according to its box office, with matinee showings available from Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28, at the time of writing. The venue’s September programme is incomplete, but available dates for The Odyssey include September 4, 8, 10, 12 and 13. The source added there may be further showings added in the next week or so. Otherwise, London’s Science Museum is fully booked for showings of the film throughout July and August.
Alternatively, Cineworld Leicester Square IMAX has widespread availability with multiple daily screenings over the next few months. While Cineworld Leicester Square IMAX is slightly wider, the BFI IMAX in Waterloo has a much taller screen, giving it a significantly larger overall image. BFI’s 1.43:1 screen is one of the few in the world capable of showing the full IMAX image for films like The Odyssey, making it the definitive choice for the most immersive presentation. However, Cineworld Leicester Square remains an excellent alternative, with a huge dual-laser IMAX screen that will still deliver a premium viewing experience for audiences unable to secure BFI tickets.
The movie has so far proven to be a box office phenomenon, shattering records with a $264 million (£198.2 million) opening weekend and sending sales of Homer’s epic poem through the roof, igniting online debates and discussions from scholars and newbies alike.

Across eight weeks, 173 consecutive Imax 70mm screenings have sold out entirely according to the BFI, with audience members reportedly travelling to London from locations including Singapore, Los Angeles and Toronto to see the film.
BFI Imax programme manager Madeleine Mullett said: “The extraordinary demand for our Imax 70mm presentation of The Odyssey, experienced as intended by the filmmakers, is ultimate proof of the appetite audiences have for cinema at its most authentic.”
The Odyssey, which is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, with Matt Damon starring as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, as he makes his perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War, is the first feature film to be shot entirely with Imax film cameras.
It also beat the previous BFI Imax presale record held by Dune: Part Two (2024), which generated £366,000 in its first 24 hours on sale, and Oppenheimer, which took £254,000 over the same period, selling 28,000 tickets in 24 hours and generating £750,000 in gross revenue.
The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. The BFI Imax is one of only three Imax 70mm prints in the UK.
