Universal responds after Odyssey leaks online amid stellar box office

Universal has issued a response after The Odyssey was leaked in full online, just over a week after its release in cinemas.

A high-quality version of Christopher Nolan’s epic film racked up millions of views after being illegally uploaded to X over the weekend, but it has now been removed after the studio intervened.

“We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols,” a statement from Universal reads.

Of course, much has been made about the fact that The Odyssey is a film very much designed for the big screen – the first in history to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras – and so it makes sense that Universal would be especially annoyed by this leak.

Still, it doesn’t look to have dampened the film’s incredible box office dominance by any measure. The film is now well on its way to reaching the $1 billion mark, having grossed over $600 million in just two weekends and showing little sign of slowing.

Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s classic poem has been widely praised by both critics and audiences, with our own Radio Times review awarding the film 5 stars and declaring it “a powerful and profound achievement.”

Our reviewer James Mottram wrote: “Filled with blazing action, blood-curdling fights and creatures that truly bring Homer’s epic poem to life, this is Nolan at his finest.”

The film stars Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron some of the other major names in the starry cast.

The Odyssey is now showing in UK cinemas.
