DJI and Insta360 have both recently revealed their latest respective gimbal cameras.
As both the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P and Insta360 Luna Ultra are fitted with dual cameras, deciding between them can be a difficult task. That’s where we come in.
While we’re yet to review either device, we’ve compared their specs and highlighted the key points that could help you choose between either the Osmo Pocket 4P and the Luna Ultra.
We’ve also compared the Insta360 Luna Ultra vs Osmo Pocket 4, and the Osmo Pocket 4 to the Pocket 4P, so you can see how the new releases compare to the 4.5-star flagship. Otherwise, our round-up of the best action cameras has our current favourites from the past year or so.
Price and Availability
After initially launching in Beijing back in June, the Osmo Pocket 4P is available to buy now with a starting RRP of £529 / €599.
In comparison, the Insta360 Luna Ultra is available to buy now and has a starting RRP of £649/$769.99 for the Standard bundle. Like the Osmo Pocket 4, the Luna Ultra comes with a choice between different bundles, which combine various different accessories.
Both have main and a telephoto lenses
We’ll start with one of the key similarities between the Osmo Pocket 4P and Luna Ultra – and perhaps the reason you’d opt for either camera over the likes of the Pocket 4 or the Go Ultra. That’s because both of the devices are equipped with two lenses: a main and a telephoto.
Naturally, the Pocket 4P and Luna Ultra differ with their exact offerings. For example, while the Luna Ultra’s telephoto has a f2.0 aperture, the Pocket 4P’s own is f1.8.

Osmo Pocket 4P’s main lens delivers 17-stops of dynamic range
Following on from the above, although both are fitted with dual cameras, they differ with their exact offerings. DJI promises that the Pocket 4P’s one-inch CMOS sensor delivers 17 stops of ultra-high dynamic range, and is the first to feature a 10-bit D-Log 2 professional color mode “unlocking limitless post-production creative possibilities”.

In comparison, the Luna Ultra delivers 14 stops of dynamic range, which is the same as the Pocket 4. In theory, the Pocket 4P’s higher dynamic range should mean it’s able to handle high-contrast and low-lighting situations better than the Luna Ultra – though we should disclaim that we haven’t actually reviewed either camera yet, so can’t confirm whether this is true.
Insta360 Luna Ultra supports up to 8K recording
Although its main sensor delivers slightly less stops of dynamic range, that’s not to say the Luna Ultra isn’t fitted with plenty of premium photography ability. In fact, its one-inch Leica lens can capture cinematic quality in up to a whopping 8K, with Insta360 promising that even when footage is cropped or enlarged, it’ll still remain “crystal clear” with true-to-life colours.
However, and perhaps unsurprisingly, just note that when filming in 8K, you’ll be capped at up to 30fps. If you want to film at up to 120fps, then you’ll need to opt for 4K quality instead, which frankly many will find perfectly high quality enough.

Osmo Pocket 4P can capture 4K 240fps slow motion
Arguably one of the biggest draws of the Pocket 4P and Pocket 4 is the fact they can capture slow motion in 4K/240fps. Although we haven’t reviewed the Pocket 4P, we have tested the Pocket 4 and found its slow-motion mode to be stable, smooth and colour-rich. In fact, we even concluded that we never found ourselves needing to edit shots either. That undoubtedly bodes well for the Pocket 4P.
Instead, the Luna Ultra supports 1080p/240fps slow-motion recording, which feels pretty disappointing. Of course, we’ll have to wait until we review the Luna Ultra ourselves to see how it performs.
Early Verdict
With 4K 240fps slow motion support and a promise of up to 17-stops of dynamic range, the Osmo Pocket 4P is certainly an exciting prospect – especially as the Luna Ultra maxes out at 1080p 240fps slow-mo and 14-stops.
Having said that, the Luna Ultra can capture up to a whopping 8K, whereas the Osmo Pocket 4P reaches 4K instead.
We’ll be sure to update this versus once we review both the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P and Insta360 Luna Ultra.
