The block forms part of a wider 461-home redevelopment of the site
A recently completed affordable housing development in North London is now home to 96 households that were previously identified as homeless, according to the council. It forms part of a wider 461-home redevelopment of a former bus garage, which will ultimately deliver more than 40 per cent affordable homes when complete.
Brent Council first approved plans for the redevelopment of the former Alperton Bus Garage in 2021, with construction work on the affordable homes completed in May of this year. The wider scheme is expected to support around 1,200 residents when complete, including households moving into the 155 affordable council homes at the recently developed Shillibeer House.
There have already been 103 households who have moved into the new homes on the site, 96 of whom were previously identified as homeless, Brent Council has said. The local authority said the development has been named after George Shillibeer, who pioneered London’s first horse-drawn omnibus service, in order to recognise the site’s “long association with public transport”.
Shillibeer House comprises 155 affordable homes, broken down into 55 one-bedroom, 49 two-bedroom, and 46 three-bedroom flats, as well as five four-bedroom family homes. Developers Telford Living has now handed the homes over to rental operator AG Homes, with Brent Council taking on a long-term lease.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Resident Services, Cllr Matt Kelcher, said: “These 155 new council homes mean more local people can move into safe, modern and energy-efficient homes where they can put down roots and thrive. Each home represents a fresh start and brings us another step closer to tackling the housing crisis.”
Shillibeer House forms part of a wider 461-home mixed-use redevelopment of the former Bus Depot site. The scheme will deliver a total of 40 per cent on-site affordable housing across four buildings of up to 28 storeys, which will be managed by the local authority as council homes. Overall, the site is expected to support around 1,200 new residents when complete.
The development includes 306 Build-to-Rent units, 98 homes at London Affordable Rent, and 57 shared-ownership units, alongside commercial space, a community unit, a café, and light-industrial “maker spaces” designed to support local enterprise.
