Police are urging people to only swim in designated areas following the tragedy
A 14-year-old boy has been found dead after entering the water at Millwall Outer Dock in East London.
Emergency services were called to East Ferry Road, in Isle of Dogs, shortly before 6.50pm yesterday (August 3) following reports the teenager had gotten into difficulty.
Police, ambulance crews, and rescue boats with London Fire Brigade launched a search for the boy as large crowds watched on in distress. The operation was called off upon the recovery of a body at 10.30pm.
Though the 14-year-old is yet to be named publicly, his family is receiving support, the Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement this morning.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of this young boy at this incredibly difficult time,” said Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter.
He added: “As the warm weather continues, I would urge everyone to remember that open water can present serious dangers. Please only swim in designated areas and take the time to speak with children and young people about staying safe around water.”
The boy’s death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious and enquiries continue to prepare a report for the coroner, the force added.
