If TfL secures the funding, we could see several new Tube stations in areas where residents have wanted one for years
Transport for London (TfL) wants to push ahead with ambitious proposals to extend the Bakerloo line further into South London, with construction anticipated to commence in the 2030s and the completed route projected to be operational by 2040.
The proposed extension would stretch from Elephant and Castle through to Lewisham, potentially incorporating three brand-new stops along its path, with speculation mounting over further expansion beyond Lewisham itself.
TfL has indicated possible locations for the new Underground stations, with Burgess Park and Old Kent Road emerging as frontrunners.
Currently, the closest Tube stations to Burgess Park are Kennington and Oval, both situated on the Northern line, while South Bermondsey National Rail station lies to the east.
Queens Road Peckham Overground stop can be found to the southeast.
Further proposals outline an Old Kent Road station positioned between the suggested Burgess Park stop and New Cross Gate, which already operates as both an Overground and National Rail station. Lewisham, meanwhile, functions as a DLR stop with nationwide rail connections.
Documents published in February last year reveals a map currently being used by officials, indicating new Tube stops at Burgess Park and Old Kent Road, alongside the introduction of new Tube services at existing ‘interchange stations’ – New Cross Gate and Lewisham.
Plans to extend the Metropolitan line into Hertfordshire, however, have been firmly shelved, with proposals for two new Underground stations beyond the capital’s boundaries now completely abandoned.
The Croxley Rail Link project had originally envisaged the creation of two new Tube stations at the northwestern terminus of the Metropolitan line.
Under the initial proposals, Tube trains would have been rerouted away from Watford station towards Cassiobridge, the first of the two suggested stops. Despite an original completion date pencilled in for 2020, the project was unceremoniously suspended in 2017.
The second proposed station, Watford Vicarage Road, would have followed Cassiobridge, with services continuing to Watford High Street and Watford Junction, entirely bypassing Watford station. Yet this scheme also came to an abrupt halt in 2017.
Hertfordshire County Council is now exploring ‘alternative uses’ for the disused railway track between Watford and Croxley, in the wake of the Metropolitan line Extension project being axed.
