The Weeknd is coming to Wembley in August
After over a year of anticipation, the moment is nigh as alternative R&B superstar The Weeknd plays five nights at Wembley Stadium this month as part of the European leg of his ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ tour. The Weeknd will play Wembley Stadium on Friday, August 14, Saturday, August 15, Sunday, August 16, Tuesday, August 18, and Wednesday, August 19.
The Weeknd’s return to London comes in the wake of his sixth studio album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow”, which arrived in January of this year and topped the charts in both the US and UK.
Across his career, The Weeknd has been the recipient of four Grammy Awards, a Latin Grammy Award, 22 Juno Awards, and nominations for Academy and Primetime Emmy Awards. He also performed as a headliner in the Super Bowl halftime show in 2021. Here, we dive into just what fans can expect when he rocks into Wembley.
Who is The Weeknd?
Abel Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd, was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1990, the only child of Ethiopian parents. At 17, he dropped out of school and adopted the stage name ‘The Weekend’ due to his hedonistic lifestyle, later dropping the last ‘e’ to avoid copyright issues.
The Weeknd first released music anonymously in 2009 before co-founding his own record label XO, which he used to release mixtapes with an alternative R&B sound. He later signed with Republic Records and reissued his mixtape songs with a finer finish, experimenting with dreamy pop and New Wave. Songs “What You Need”, “Loft Music” and “This Morning” gained traction online and received a shout-out from big names such as rapper Drake.
It was The Weeknd’s second studio album, “Beauty Behind The Madness” in 2015, that propelled him to stardom, and scored the hit singles “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills”. His fourth album, “After Hours” in 2020, took him to new heights with its aura of 1980s synth nostalgia, and yielded the mega hit “Blinding Lights” which became the top-performing single ever on the Billboard 100 and single-most downloaded track on Spotify.

Support Act
US rapper Playboi Carti has been announced as the sole support act for The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn tour dates at Wembley Stadium in August.
Known for his eccentric vocals and avant-garde style, Playboi Carti is a pioneer of the rage subgenre of trap music. His songs typically evoke strong atmospheric vibes, helped by his earthy vocal intonations instead of the usual thumping spoken lyrics of rap. His super hit ‘Magnolia’ launched him into the mainstream in 2017.
Show times
Doors open at Wembley Stadium at 5pm (but 4,30pm on Sunday) and Playboi Carti is thought to begin his set at around 6.15pm, ahead of the Weeknd appearing at around 8.10pm (7.40pm on Sunday). It is thought the show will conclude by 10.30pm, when a curfew is in place.
