There may be hope on the horizon with showers and slightly cooler temperatures forecast
Gardeners, rejoice – we may be getting some rain.
Emphasis on the may. BBC Weather currently forecasts rainfall in London on Monday (August 17), but predicting the weather this far ahead is always difficult and liable to change.
If we do get some rain, it will come in showers and with some far more pleasant temperatures, with highs sitting around 23C. There will be light winds as well, perfect for cooling off.
And we’ll need to cool off – this week the mercury could go as high as 35C, according to the latest. That should be on Thursday (August 13), with temperatures on Wednesday (August 12) creeping up to 32C.
For today (Tuesday, August 11), things will remain dry but temperatures will sit around highs of 25C between 3 and 4pm.
After the heatwave, at the tail end of this week, temperatures will return to the mid-20s and stay between highs of 23C and 26C for the foreseeable. The current BBC forecast doesn’t go beyond Monday August 24, so it’s entirely possible that the heatwaves could make a comeback.
For those wondering what constitutes a heatwave, it varies around the country. The threshold for London is three days on the trot on which temperatures climb higher than 28C.
In other words, Wednesday August 12 to Friday August 14 will be a heatwave, but beyond that it won’t be, even if it is still pretty hot.
More heatwaves could be on their way, however – as late as September, according to the Met Office’s long range forecast.
It reads: “High pressure will probably be dominant in the vicinity of the UK during this period, meaning periods of dry weather for many regions.
“However, some more unsettled or changeable interludes are probable at times, bringing showers or some longer spells of rain, although overall rainfall amounts are more likely to be below average than above. Temperatures will likely be above average and some spells of hot weather and heatwaves are possible, especially in the south.”
