Travellers must make one key check before starting their journey

Holidaymakers flying from London Luton Airport have been told to keep one important document close at hand, as it could be a holiday money-saver. The airport’s new Fly and Ride scheme allows passengers to travel without paying on selected Arriva and Stagecoach buses until August 31.

Travellers only need to show the driver a valid printed or digital boarding pass for a flight departing from London Luton Airport during the promotional period. Andrea Platania, travel expert at Transfeero, says passengers could avoid airport parking, drop-off and taxi costs, but must check that their chosen bus is included before setting off.

The offer covers Arriva routes A, Z, 101, X1, X2, X3 and X4, as well as Stagecoach’s MK1 service. These routes connect the airport with areas including Luton, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Stevenage, Bedford and Milton Keynes.

Nevertheless, not every bus or coach travelling to the airport is covered. National Express and Greenline services remain chargeable, while trains and the Luton DART are also excluded from the promotion.

Platania said: “The important detail is that the boarding pass replaces the bus ticket only on participating services. Passengers should check both the operator and route number rather than assuming every vehicle displaying London Luton Airport as its destination will be free. Several different buses and coaches may leave from the same station, and boarding the wrong one could still mean paying the normal fare.”

Passengers can use either a printed boarding pass or a digital version stored on their phone. Those hoping to use the offer after returning from holiday should keep the pass accessible, as it may disappear from the most obvious section of an airline’s app once the flight has departed.

Return journeys must also take place before the promotion ends on August 31. Travellers arriving after that date will need to pay the usual fare, even if their outbound flight left during August.

Platania said: “Most people stop thinking about their boarding pass the moment they step onto the aircraft, but under this scheme it can remain valuable after the flight. Take a screenshot before travelling and make sure the passenger name, airport and flight details are visible.

“Saving it in a digital wallet or carrying a printed copy will also prevent a flat battery, poor signal or archived airline booking from turning a free journey into a paid one.”

The free bus offer should not be confused with rail travel to Luton Airport Parkway or the Luton DART connection to the terminal. Passengers using the train will still need an appropriate rail ticket, although tickets issued to “Luton Airport” rather than “Luton Airport Parkway” may already include the DART transfer.

Those travelling on the Stagecoach MK1 should also account for the journey time. The service runs up to every 60 minutes and takes approximately 70 minutes between Milton Keynes Rail Station and London Luton Airport.

The Fly and Ride offer is available on participating routes until August 31. Passengers should keep their boarding pass, confirm the route number and check the latest timetable before travelling.

According to the airport the offer can help people from across the area get free travel. It said: “Holidaymakers across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire using London Luton Airport this August are being encouraged to leave the car at home and hop on a free bus instead.

“London Luton Airport’s month-long initiative allows adult passengers to travel free of charge on a range of Arriva and Stagecoach services simply by showing a valid printed or digital boarding pass for a flight from LLA during August 2026 to the driver. The Fly and Ride initiative complements the Department for Transport’s free summer bus travel scheme for children aged 5 to 15 in England, meaning many families can travel to the airport at no cost during the month of August.

“With some services operating 24 hours a day and buses running as frequently as every seven minutes in Luton, passengers can be dropped off directly outside the terminal door.”

It confirmed the available routes were operating the offer between 1 and 31 August 2026:

Arriva• 101: Stevenage via Hitchin• X1: Milton Keynes via Bletchley and Dunstable• X2 and X3: Milton Keynes via Bletchley, Stoke Hammond, Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable• X4: Aylesbury via Wing, Leighton Buzzard, Stanbridge, Tilsworth and Dunstable• A and Z: Houghton Regis and Dunstable

Stagecoach• MK1: Bedford and Milton Keynes, also passing through Elstow, Wixams, Clophill, Silsoe and Barton-Le-Clay

Alberto Martin, CEO of London Luton Airport, said: “This is a fantastic initiative and a great example of how we continually look to extend our simple and friendly passenger experience far beyond the terminal doors. As we prepare for our busiest summer on record, we’re delighted to offer passengers the opportunity to leave the car at home, take advantage of excellent local bus services and travel to the airport for free.

“Fully funded by the airport, this initiative demonstrates our commitment to reinvesting in transport options that benefit both our passengers and the communities we serve. By improving access to public transport, we’re helping people save money, reduce congestion and enjoy a simple and friendly journey from the moment they leave home.”

Toby France, Commercial Director for Arriva Midlands, said: “We’re delighted to be part of this initiative with London Luton Airport. It’s a great chance for families to save money on their way to the airport, leave the car at home and start their holiday. We’re proud Arriva services are part of the scheme, and our buses run frequently and drop passengers right at the terminal door.”

Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in this scheme. The bus is the quick and easy way to get to the airport, and the ideal alternative to taxi, train, Uber, or even parking. The bus takes you right to the door, is super comfy and offers you a stressless affordable start to your holiday – and will even give you a bit of extra time to finish that cliffhanger before take-off!”

Families travelling to LLA by train can also bag a bargain, with East Midlands Rail (EMR) offering £20 family tickets for journeys between London St Pancras and LLA on the Luton Airport Express (LEX). Valid for two adults and up to four children, the ticket also includes use of the Luton DART to take passengers right outside the terminal front.
