A three-year-old boy has been praised for his extraordinary quick thinking that potentially saved his mother’s life after she collapsed at their home in Doncaster.

The toddler, named James, made the emergency call when his mum, 28-year-old Georgia, suffered a sudden drop in blood pressure caused by postural hypotension and severe dehydration, leaving her unconscious on the floor.

However, the youngster managed to remain calm, and dialled 999.

The call was answered by South Yorkshire Police handler Jen, who quickly realised she needed to adapt her approach to communicate effectively with the child without alarming him.

“My priority was to keep him calm while finding a way to help him understand what I needed him to do,” said Jen.

“Instead of giving instructions that might have frightened or confused him, I turned it into a game, asking him to tickle his mum to try and wake her up.”

Within a minute, the creative gamble had paid off, and Georgia gradually regained consciousness.

For police operators, who regularly handle over 3,000 emergency calls a day, such moments are rare. Often, emergency workers make split-second decisions for people on the worst days of their lives, rarely getting to hear how the story ends.

“This call was different,” Jen said. “It reminded me that staying calm, thinking creatively, and adapting to the person on the other end of the phone can have a real impact.

“Moments like these reinforce why this job matters so much and why, despite the challenges, it is such a privilege to be a police call handler.”

The knowledge that saved Georgia had been given to James just months earlier, when she and her husband, Jake, had taught him how to make an emergency call after a family outing to Sheffield’s Emergency Services Museum.

“He potentially saved my life as I didn’t know how long I was going to be passed out for,” Georgia said. “When I came round, I was an absolute mess, but the police operator on the other end of the phone managed to calm me down.”

Responders PC Jordan Kassim and PC Charlotte Wright arrived shortly afterwards to check on Georgia’s welfare.

Rewarding the brave toddler, the officers let him sit inside a real police car and presented him with a toy helicopter.

“He is an incredible little boy, and we still can’t believe he managed to do it and recognised the emergency,” Georgia said.

“I hope this encourages other parents to consider having the same conversation with their children. It’s so important to teach them while they’re young — it could be lifesaving.”
