Ms Hall has died at the age of 76, with former partner Robin Askwith confirming the sad news on social media
EastEnders and Citizen Smith actress Cheryl Hall has passed away at the age of 76, with no cause of death yet confirmed.
The London-born actress’s death was announced by her well-known former partner, Robin Askwith.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), her former partner penned: “What a force of nature she was… A really innovative, working-class, charismatic actress coming out of the late 60s.
“Brave in every way. And now I have the sad news that she has passed away… I am devastated… she was my beginning… RIP Cheryl Hall.”
Cheryl is perhaps best remembered for her role as Shirley Johnson in the beloved British sitcom Citizen Smith (1977–1979), as well as a recurring appearance as Sadie in The Bill. One of her earliest television roles came in 1971, when she portrayed Eileen, a clippie, in the On the Buses episode “The Epidemic”.
Some viewers may also recall her appearing in BBC soap EastEnders as Christine across several episodes in 1988. During her time on Citizen Smith, she played the girlfriend of Robert Lindsay’s character Wolfie Smith, a young Marxist from Tooting.
Though the pair portrayed on-screen love interests, Cheryl and Robert had also been married in real life for three years after saying “I do” in 1974, before divorcing in 1980.
Citizen Smith is a 1970s British sitcom created by John Sullivan following Walter Henry “Wolfie” Smith, an unemployed, self-proclaimed Marxist “urban guerrilla” in Tooting, South London, who tries to emulate Che Guevara while leading a tiny, disorganized group of friends called the Tooting Popular Front.
Tributes poured in swiftly from devoted fans, with one writing: “Met her a few times back in the 60s. Her dad, George, was a regular in The Shakespeare next to Bethnal Green Police Station and she came in with him from time to time..”
Another added: “Was watching the Sweeney last night (contact breaker) and she pop up in that episode. Beautiful lady. Sorry for your loss.”
